Ford Explorer Recall 21V316: Roof rail covers can detach, creating road debris hazard

NHTSA campaign 21V316, reported May 5, 2021, 616,967 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2016 through 2019 Ford Explorer vehicles may have roof rail retention pins that can loosen over time. If the pins loosen, the roof rail covers can come off the vehicle while driving.

A detached roof rail cover can become a road hazard for other drivers and increase the risk of a crash. Owners should be aware of this risk and have their vehicle checked promptly.

The repair is free at an authorized Ford dealer. Dealers will install push-pins and replace any damaged rail clips and roof rail covers as needed. Owners can also contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and should check their vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
