Ford F-53 Recall 21V202: Rear Axle Lubricant Shortage Can Cause Loss of Power and Crash Risk

NHTSA campaign 21V202, reported March 24, 2021, 16,128 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some 2020-2021 Ford F-53 motorhome stripped chassis and F-59 commercial stripped chassis vehicles may have an inadequate amount of rear axle lubricant. This can lead to rear wheel bearing damage and seizure, as well as failure of the rear axle or driveshaft.

If the rear axle or driveshaft fails, the vehicle may lose motive power, the parking brake may fail, and the transmission may be unable to shift into PARK. These conditions increase the risk of a crash. Owners will be notified by mail, and the remedy is free: an authorized Ford dealer will inspect the rear wheel bearings and replace them if necessary.

If you own one of these vehicles, check your VIN for open recalls and contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, referencing Ford recall number 21S17, to schedule the free inspection and repair.
