- Component
- VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS; VISIBILITY:SUN/MOON ROOF ASSEMBLY
- Problem
- BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 228i, 228i xDrive, and M235i xDrive vehicles. If the driver initiates an automatic closure of the sunroof, and the vehicle key status is changed to "off" or "lock," the sunroof may continue to close. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 118, "Power-operated Window Systems."
- Risk
- If the sunroof continues to close after the vehicle is shut off, it may increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy
- BMW will notify owners, and dealers will update the sunroof electronic coding software, free of charge. The recall began April 16, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
What this recall means for you
If the driver starts an automatic sunroof close and then turns the vehicle off or locks it with the key, the sunroof may keep closing anyway. This means the vehicle does not meet federal safety requirements for power-operated windows.
Because the sunroof can continue moving after the vehicle is shut off, there is an increased risk of injury, particularly if someone is near or reaching into the opening.
BMW will notify owners, and authorized dealers will update the sunroof electronic coding software at no cost to you. To check whether your vehicle is affected, enter your VIN at NHTSA or contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
