What this recall means for you
On certain vehicles, the power liftgate can partially lower on its own when fully opened and the vehicle is parked facing uphill on a slope. The liftgate is not held securely in that situation, so it can move without warning.
If the liftgate drops unexpectedly while someone is reaching into the rear storage area, the person can be struck or pinned, which increases the risk of injury. Avoid using the power liftgate on a slope until the repair is done, and keep clear of the liftgate's path when it is open.
The repair is free at an authorized Mazda dealer. The dealer will update the power liftgate control module software and inspect the serial number of the power liftgate drive unit, replacing the unit if necessary. Mazda will notify affected owners, and you can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
