Freightliner Cascadia Recall 21V073: Engine Flywheel Can Detach, Causing Power Loss and Crash Risk

NHTSA campaign 21V073, reported February 12, 2021, 7 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The capscrews that attach the flywheel to the crankshaft may have been improperly torqued, allowing the flywheel to come loose. The defect affects certain vehicles equipped with a Cummins X15 engine.

If the flywheel detaches, the vehicle can lose drive power, which increases the risk of a crash. Driveline pieces may also be ejected from the engine compartment, which increases the risk of injury.

Cummins dealers will properly torque the capscrews, inspect for possible damage, and repair any damage found, free of charge. Owners can contact Daimler Trucks North America customer service at 1-800-547-0712 (recall number FL-875), and can check their VIN for open recalls.
