Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Recall 21V051: Passenger airbag inflator can explode, sending metal fragments

NHTSA campaign 21V051, reported February 5, 2021, 284,645 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The passenger-side frontal airbag inflator in these vehicles uses a propellant that can degrade over time when exposed to high humidity, high temperatures, and repeated temperature changes. A degraded inflator may explode when the airbag deploys, sending sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants.

An inflator explosion can cause serious injury or death. The recall covers vehicles originally sold or ever registered in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, known as Zone A. Owners were mailed notification letters on February 22, 2021 and May 11, 2021, and a second notification will be mailed once the remedy is available.

Authorized dealers will replace the front passenger airbag inflator with an alternate one at no cost. To check whether your vehicle has this or any other open recall, enter your VIN on the NHTSA recall lookup, or contact Cadillac at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC at 1-800-462-8782, and quote recall number N212328770.
