What this recall means for you
Certain 2020-2021 BMW 530i xDrive, 540i xDrive and 2021 740Li xDrive vehicles may have output shafts that break at the rear wheels. The shafts can fail because of a heat treatment error made during supplier production. The shafts carry power from the driveshaft to the rear wheels.
A broken output shaft can cause a loss of drive power, or a rollaway if the vehicle is parked and the parking brake is not engaged. That increases the risk of a crash.
BMW will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the output shaft(s) free of charge. The recall began March 24, 2021. You can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and you should check your VIN for open recalls on your vehicle.
