Smeal Aerial Recall 21V005: Firefighting Monitor Remote May Lose Battery Power Fast

NHTSA campaign 21V005, reported January 12, 2021, 2 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The battery-powered wireless remote controller used to operate electric firefighting monitors can discharge faster than normal. This happens because its sleep mode is disabled, so the batteries drain while the unit is not in use.

If the remote cannot be used, the crew may be unable to aim and adjust the water stream during firefighting, which could hinder firefighting efforts and increase the risk of injury.

Owners will be notified. The remedy is a free software update: the dealer will ask you to return the affected controller to Akron Brass for the update, at no cost. You can contact Smeal customer service at 1-800-867-6478, and you can check your VIN for open recalls.
