- Problem
- Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2021-2022 IC Bus CE school buses. The weather seal of the illuminated stop sign unit may allow contaminants to enter into the unit, resulting in reduced performance. In certain cases, an electrical short may occur which would render the unit inoperable.
- Risk
- If the sign performance is inhibited, or completely inoperable, it can reduce the visibility for oncoming drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the LED illuminated school bus signs, free of charge. The recall began December 15, 2020. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
What this recall means for you
The illuminated stop sign unit on certain school buses may let contaminants like water and dirt in through a faulty weather seal. This can reduce the sign's brightness or, in some cases, cause an electrical short that makes the sign completely inoperable.
A sign that is dim or not working makes it harder for oncoming drivers to see that the bus is stopping for students, which increases the risk of a crash involving children getting on or off the bus.
Navistar will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the LED illuminated school bus stop signs free of charge. Owners can contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls at no cost.
