Volkswagen Beetle Recall 20V785: Driver airbag inflator can explode, sending metal fragments

NHTSA campaign 20V785, reported December 16, 2020, 105,652 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The driver's side front airbag inflator can rupture because its propellant degrades over time when exposed to high humidity, high temperatures, and repeated temperature swings. Under these conditions the inflator may explode when the airbag deploys, sending sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants. Such an explosion can cause serious injury or death.

Volkswagen will notify owners of affected vehicles, and authorized dealers will replace the driver's front airbag at no cost to you. The recall began March 19, 2021. You can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 69BC.

We recommend checking your vehicle's VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup to confirm whether it has an open recall, and scheduling the free repair at an authorized dealer.
