Mitsubishi Outlander Recall 20V741: Parking Brake May Fail to Hold, Risking Rollaway

NHTSA campaign 20V741, reported November 30, 2020, 21,758 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2016 Outlander and Outlander Sport vehicles may have a rust prevention coating on the rear brake operating shafts that was peeled off during assembly. Water can then enter the rear brake caliper boot, causing the parking brake operating shafts to corrode and possibly bind.

If the shafts bind, the parking brakes may not engage or disengage fully. A parking brake that does not engage properly can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy is free. Dealers will replace the rear brake caliper assemblies at no charge. Owner letters were mailed May 4, 2021. You can contact Mitsubishi Motors North America customer service at 1-888-648-7820, referencing recall SR-20-005, and check your vehicle's VIN for any open recalls.
