Isuzu NPR HD Recall 20V721: Chafing Wiring and Coolant Hose Can Cause Stalls or Fire

NHTSA campaign 20V721, reported November 20, 2020, 46 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2020 medium-duty trucks with 6.6L gasoline engines may have a chassis wiring harness and a coolant surge hose (the hose from the radiator to the reservoir) that can rub against each other or other components. Continued chafing can wear through the hose, causing it to leak engine coolant, or damage the harness, causing an electrical short.

These conditions can lead to a no-start, an engine stall, or an electrical short, which raises the risk of a crash or fire. The remedy involves adjusting the positive cable on affected vehicles, and the repair is free at an authorized dealer. Owners of Chevrolet 4500 trucks can call the GM Medium Duty Truck assistance line at 1-800-862-4389, and Isuzu NPR-HD owners can contact Isuzu Customer Relations at 1-866-441-9638. Check your VIN for open recalls to confirm whether your vehicle is affected.

Problem
Isuzu Technical Center of America, Inc. (Isuzu) is recalling certain 2020 NPR-HD (Crew Cab) and Chevrolet 4500 (Crew Cab) vehicles equipped with 6.6L gasoline engines. The chassis harness and the coolant return hose from the radiator to the reservoir (surge hose) may chafe. Continued chafing could cause wear in the harness and/or hose, ultimately causing a hole in the hose with the potential for engine coolant to leak and/or causing damage to the harness with the potential for a short circuit.
Risk
Leaking engine coolant and/or a damaged wire harness may result in a no-start condition, an engine stall, or an electrical short. These scenarios increase the risk of a crash or fire.
Remedy
Isuzu and Chevrolet will notify their respective vehicle owners and dealers of this recall, and specifically of the need to adjust the positive cable in subject vehicles, and owners will be informed that the recall repairs will be done free of charge.
