Western Star 4700 Recall 20V634: Incorrect axle weight label could lead to overloading and crash risk

NHTSA campaign 20V634, reported October 14, 2020, 53 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The vehicle certification label on these trucks lists a Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) that is higher than the capacity of the tires. Because the label overstates what the axles can safely carry, the vehicle may be loaded beyond its safe limit, which the notice says could increase the risk of a crash. The vehicles also do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 120 for wheels and rims.

The manufacturer, Daimler Trucks North America, will notify owners, and dealers will install accurate GAWR labels at no cost. The recall began November 25, 2020. Owners can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 and reference recall number FL-864.

If you own one of these vehicles, check your VIN for open recalls and contact an authorized dealer to have the correct label installed. Until the corrected label is in place, be mindful of the load you carry and make sure it stays within the limits of your tires and axles.
