Tesla Model Y Recall 20V609: Trailer Brake Lights May Not Light Up When Braking

NHTSA campaign 20V609, reported September 30, 2020, 2,567 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2020 vehicles with a specific rear lamp and tow package configuration have a software error that stops trailer brake lights from illuminating when the brakes are applied. The vehicles therefore do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 for lighting equipment.

When trailer brake lights fail to come on during braking, drivers behind you and the trailer's own driver lose a key warning that you are slowing or stopping, which increases the risk of a crash.

Tesla has released a software update that was sent to affected vehicles over the air beginning September 23, 2020, so no dealer visit is required for the fix. Owners can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752, and Tesla's recall number is SB-20-00-002. The repair is free, and you should check your VIN for any open recalls.
