- Problem
- General Motors is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD Medium Duty trucks. If the vehicle's body control module (BCM) loses communication with the vehicle's electronic brake control module (EBCM), the EBCM software programming may not illuminate the vehicle's ABS malfunction indicator light (MIL). As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 105, "Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems."
- Risk
- If a driver is unaware that the ABS system is malfunctioning, there may be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the software calibration for the body control module (BCM). The recall began June 29, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N202305070.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
What this recall means for you
Certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD medium duty trucks may have a software problem in the body control module (BCM). If the BCM loses communication with the electronic brake control module (EBCM), the EBCM software may fail to turn on the ABS malfunction indicator light. The vehicle's anti-lock braking system may then be malfunctioning without the driver knowing it, which increases the risk of a crash. These vehicles also do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 105 for hydraulic and electric brake systems.
The remedy is a software update to the body control module, which dealers will perform for free. General Motors will notify owners by mail.
If you own one of these trucks, you can contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and you can check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls to confirm whether your truck is affected.
