US Cargo Cargo Trailer Recall 20V317: Trailer Safety Chains May Break, Causing Detachment

NHTSA campaign 20V317, reported May 29, 2020, 122 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The safety chains on these cargo trailers are not strong enough for the trailer's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). If the trailer becomes unhitched from the tow vehicle, the chains may break, allowing the trailer to fully detach.

A detached trailer can cause property damage, serious personal injury, or a crash involving other vehicles. Owners of affected 2020 and 2021 units should take this seriously and stop relying on the existing chains until they are checked.

The remedy is free. Forest River will notify owners, and an authorized dealer or service center will replace the safety chains at no cost. You can contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-848-1335, referencing recall number 24-1167. You can also check your trailer's VIN for open recalls.
