BMW 530e Recall 20V243: Front Airbag Inflators May Fail to Deploy Properly

NHTSA campaign 20V243, reported April 29, 2020, 33 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain BMW 5 Series and 540i vehicles may have front head airbag inflators that were exposed to excessive humidity. Over time, this exposure can affect how the head airbags deploy, and the igniter could separate from the inflator.

If the head airbag does not deploy properly, or the igniter separates during a crash of sufficient severity, the risk of injury is increased. Owners should take this recall seriously and have the affected airbag checked.

BMW will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the left or right head airbag free of charge. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and should check their VIN for open recalls to confirm whether their vehicle is affected.
