Hyundai Elantra Recall 20V061: Moisture in ABS Module Can Cause Engine Fire

NHTSA campaign 20V061, reported February 4, 2020, 476,111 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Moisture can get into the anti-lock brake (ABS) module in these Hyundai vehicles and cause an electrical short inside the module. The short can start a fire in the engine compartment, and it can happen even when the vehicle is turned off.

An engine compartment fire increases the risk of injury and vehicle damage. Because the fire can occur while the car is parked and switched off, owners should take this recall seriously even if the car seems to be running normally.

Hyundai will notify affected owners. Authorized Hyundai dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the ABS short-circuit while the car is off, and the repair is free of charge. Owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 (Hyundai recall number 188), and can check their VIN for open recalls.
