Hyundai Kona Recall 20V022: Wrong weight rating label may lead to overloading

NHTSA campaign 20V022, reported January 17, 2020, 477 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The certification label on certain vehicles may show an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR). This means the label does not accurately state how much weight the axles are rated to carry, and the vehicle may not fully meet federal safety standards for certification and tire selection.

Because the listed axle rating may be wrong, a vehicle could be loaded beyond what its axles and tires are designed to handle. An overloaded vehicle has a higher risk of crashing, so owners should avoid exceeding the weight limits on the label.

The remedy is free. Dealers will install new label stickers showing the correct GAWR over the affected areas of the certification label. Owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 (Hyundai recall number 187), and should check their VIN for open recalls.
