BMW X5 Recall 20V016: Passenger air bag may explode and spray metal fragments

NHTSA campaign 20V016, reported January 15, 2020, 4,007 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The passenger frontal air bag inflator in these BMW vehicles uses a propellant that can degrade over time after long exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and repeated temperature changes. When this happens, the inflator can explode during deployment instead of inflating the bag as designed.

An inflator explosion can send sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants, which may cause serious injury or death. Because of this risk, the manufacturer advises owners not to drive the vehicle until the remedy has been completed.

The repair is free of charge: an authorized BMW dealer will replace the passenger front air bag. You can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information, and check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
