Ferrari 458 Italia Recall 20V007: Passenger Airbag Inflator May Explode, Causing Injury

NHTSA campaign 20V007, reported January 9, 2020, 982 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Ferrari California and 458 Italia vehicles from 2009 to 2011 have a front passenger airbag inflator that uses ammonium nitrate propellant. Over time, long-term exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and repeated temperature changes can degrade this propellant, causing the inflator to explode.

If the inflator ruptures, sharp metal fragments can strike the driver or other occupants, which may result in serious injury or death. These airbag inflators were used as interim replacement parts during earlier Takata airbag recalls.

Ferrari will notify affected owners. Authorized dealers will replace the front passenger airbag assembly with a new one that uses a non-ammonium nitrate inflator, at no cost to you. To check whether your vehicle is affected, contact Ferrari customer service at 1-201-816-2668 (Ferrari recall number 60FL), and check your VIN for open recalls.
