BMW 323i Recall 19V853: Driver airbag may rupture or underinflate in a crash

NHTSA campaign 19V853, reported November 26, 2019, 74,185 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The driver-side frontal airbag inflator on these vehicles may have been replaced with a unit that absorbs moisture. Over time, the inflator can rupture or the airbag cushion may not fully inflate.

If the airbag deploys in a crash, a ruptured inflator can send metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants, and an underinflated airbag may not protect the occupant properly. Both situations raise the risk of serious injury or death.

The replacement driver airbag inflator will be swapped out free of charge at an authorized BMW dealer. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and should check their VIN for open recalls.
