IC Bus Cesb Recall 19V534: Bus May Crank Engine Unexpectedly While Being Serviced

NHTSA campaign 19V534, reported July 17, 2019, 16 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2020 IC school buses with PSI gasoline or propane engines and C7 Body Control Modules can experience an electrical overload in the BCM caused by the starter solenoid. This can damage the BCM's starter circuit, which may send an unintended command to crank the engine even when the ignition is in the run position and the transmission is in park or neutral.

The danger is that the engine could start unexpectedly while the vehicle is being serviced, increasing the risk of personal injury to anyone working on or near the bus.

Owners will be notified by the manufacturer. Dealers will install an overlay harness and relay so the starter circuit gets power directly instead of through the BCM. The repair is free at an authorized dealer. Check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls to see whether your bus is affected.

Problem
Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2020 IC CE school buses equipped with PSI gasoline or propane engines and C7 Body Control Modules (BCM). An electrical overload condition in the BCM from the starter solenoid may occur and cause damage to the starter circuit of the BCM, possibly resulting in an unintended command to crank the engine when the ignition key is in the run position and the transmission is in the park or neutral position.
Risk
If the ignition is in the run position and the engine starts unexpectedly while the vehicle is being serviced, there would be an increased risk of personal injury.
Remedy
Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will install an overlay harness and relay to provide electrical power to the starter circuit, instead of using the BCM to provide power. This repair will be performed free of charge. The recall began September 12, 2019. Navistar's number for this recall is 19512.
