What this recall means for you
Road salt can cause corrosion of the front cross member on certain 2011-2013 Mazda6 vehicles. The corrosion may weaken the mounting point for the passenger-side lower control arm, which can unexpectedly change steering alignment and raise the risk of a crash. This recall covers vehicles sold or ever registered in a list of northeastern, mid-Atlantic, and midwestern states, and it expands an earlier recall.
If you own a covered vehicle, contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, Option 4, and refer to recall number 2818I. Mazda will notify owners, and an authorized dealer will inspect the front cross member at no cost. Depending on the vehicle's condition, the dealer will either install a side member and drain hose and apply wax to protect against rust, or install a drain hose and an improved front cross member, free of charge.
You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls on the NHTSA website or through your Mazda dealer.
