What this recall means for you
Some 2019 first responder vehicles built on a Ford F-550 chassis and equipped with Whelen brake lights may have brake lights that illuminate even when the brake pedal has not been pressed. Depending on how the vehicle's wiring is set up, this can happen, and the vehicles do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 for lamps and reflective devices.
The main risk is confusion for other drivers. False brake light signals can make nearby drivers think you are slowing or stopping when you are not, which could lead to a rear-end collision or other crash.
Watts Manufacturing, LLC will notify owners, and Whelen dealers will replace the brake lights at no cost to you. The recall began March 19, 2019. You can contact Watts Manufacturing customer service at 1-785-404-6003 for more information, and you should check your vehicle's VIN for any open recalls.
