Western Star 4900 Recall 19V171: Odometer Mislabeled as Miles, Speed Reading Risk

NHTSA campaign 19V171, reported March 5, 2019, 361 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The odometer on these trucks accumulates distance in kilometers, but the display is labeled as miles. The vehicles therefore do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 101 for control and displays.

The mismatch can confuse the driver about how far the truck has traveled and may lead to incorrect assumptions about speed. An incorrect speed assumption could increase the risk of a crash.

The remedy is free at an authorized dealer, where the speedometer will be replaced. Owners will be notified by the manufacturer, Daimler Trucks North America, and can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 (recall number FL-812). Check your VIN for open recalls.
