- Problem
- Mack Trucks Inc. (Mack) is recalling one 2014 Pinnacle (CXU) vehicle and certain 2018-2019 Mack Anthem (AN) vehicles equipped with air brake supply tanks that have an air volume amount ranging from 70% to 96% of the amount required by the regulation. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."
- Risk
- The undersized air brake supply reservoir may provide an insufficient air supply to properly operate the brakes during repetitive brake applications, reducing braking performance and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Mack will notify owners and dealers will add an air tank to the affected vehicles, free of charge. The recall began April 10, 2019. Owners may contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack's number for this recall is SC0417.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
What this recall means for you
Some Mack Pinnacle and Anthem trucks may have air brake supply tanks that are smaller than federal requirements. The tanks hold between 70% and 96% of the required air volume, so the vehicles do not fully meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 121 for air brake systems.
An undersized air supply reservoir may not provide enough air to operate the brakes properly during repeated brake applications. This can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.
Mack Trucks will notify affected owners, and dealers will add an air tank to the vehicle at no cost. Owners can contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177 and reference recall number SC0417. You can also check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for open recalls.
