Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Recall 19V088: Fuel Tank Can Leak and Raise Fire Risk

NHTSA campaign 19V088, reported February 7, 2019, 18,574 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

On certain 2016-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and GMC Sierra 3500 trucks with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks, the fuel-level sensor in the front tank can stick in a low-level position. This allows the rear tank to overfill the front tank. The excess pressure can cause the front tank to expand and contact the driveshaft, which may puncture the tank.

A hole in the tank will leak fuel. If that fuel meets an ignition source, the risk of a fire increases. Owners should take this recall seriously and have their truck checked as soon as possible.

The repair is free at an authorized dealer. Dealers will replace the rear-tank fuel-pump module, inspect the front tank, and replace the front tank if necessary. Check your VIN for open recalls on the manufacturer's site or NHTSA's website, and contact a dealer to schedule the service.
