NHTSA campaign 19V017, reported January 14, 2019, 83,016 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The passenger-side frontal airbag inflator in certain BMW X5 and X6 vehicles can degrade over time from long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes. If the airbag deploys in a crash, the inflator may explode, sending sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants. This can cause serious injury or death.

BMW advises owners not to drive affected vehicles until the repair is done. BMW will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag module at no cost. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information, and should check their VIN for open recalls.
