BMW X1 SAV Recall 19V016: Driver Airbag Inflator Can Explode, Sending Metal Fragments

NHTSA campaign 19V016, reported January 14, 2019, 12,880 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The driver-side frontal airbag inflator can degrade over time after long-term exposure to high humidity, heat, and repeated temperature changes. The propellant can then ignite with excessive force, causing the inflator to explode.

If this happens, sharp metal fragments can strike the driver or other occupants, which may result in serious injury or death.

BMW will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the driver's frontal airbag module at no cost. Owners can call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and should check their VIN for open recalls.
