Mack Granite (Gr) Recall 18V810: Tires may lose air suddenly, raising crash risk

What this recall means for you

Certain 2019 heavy-duty trucks equipped with specific Bridgestone 425/65R22.5 tires may have exposed steel body cords in the sidewall. This can allow the tire to lose air rapidly and unexpectedly while driving. The affected vehicles also do not meet the federal tire safety standard for new pneumatic tires used on vehicles other than passenger cars.

Sudden air loss can increase the risk of a crash, since a tire failing at highway speed can cause loss of control. Owners should be especially alert to tire pressure warnings, vibration, or unusual handling while driving.

The repair is free. Owners will be notified by mail and should take their truck to a Bridgestone Tire or Mack truck service center for inspection and replacement of tires as needed. You can also contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177 (recall number SC0412), and check your vehicle identification number for open recalls.

Problem
Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain 2019 Mack Granite (GR), LR, and TerraPro (TE) trucks, equipped with Bridgestone M854 tires with DOT date codes 2418-2518, Bridgestone M860A tires with DOT date code 2518 or Bridgestone M864 tires with DOT date codes 2318-2418, all of size 425/65R22.5. The sidewall steel body cords may be exposed, possibly causing unexpected, rapid air loss while driving. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 119, "New Pneumatic Tires - Other than Passenger Cars."
Risk
Rapid tire air loss can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Mack will notify owners, instructing them to take their vehicles to Bridgestone Tire or Mack truck service centers for inspection and replacement, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 19, 2018. Owners may contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack's number for this recall is SC0412.
