Toyota Tundra Recall 18V711: Tundra Load Capacity Label May Overstate Weight Limit

NHTSA campaign 18V711, reported October 11, 2018, 508 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some 2018-2019 Toyota Tundra trucks may have an incorrect load carrying capacity label. When the label was created, the accessory all-weather floormats were counted twice, so the label overstates the added weight by 10 pounds. As a result, the vehicles do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110 on tire selection and rims, because the label is not within 1% of the actual additional weight.

The risk is that a label overstating the allowable added weight could lead an owner to believe the truck can carry more cargo than it safely should, which may contribute to overloading, tire stress, and reduced handling and braking performance.

Toyota will send all affected owners a corrected label at no cost. If you own one of these vehicles, you can contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371, referencing recall number J0Z. Check your VIN for open recalls as well, and have the repair performed by an authorized dealer at no charge.

Problem
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Toyota Tundra vehicles. The accessory all-weather floormats may have been counted twice when creating the load carrying capacity modification label, resulting in the capacity modification label incorrectly overstating the additional weight by 10 pounds. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Risk
Since the incorrect label is not within 1% of the additional weight, the vehicles are not compliant with the FMVSS.
Remedy
All vehicle owners will be sent a corrected label. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is J0Z.
Notes
