Toyota Tundra Recall 18V685: Airbags may not deploy in a crash due to software fault

NHTSA campaign 18V685, reported October 4, 2018, 168,187 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may incorrectly detect a fault during the vehicle's start-up self check. When this happens, the ECU may not deploy the air bags as intended in a crash, so these vehicles do not meet federal safety standards for occupant crash protection and side impact protection.

If the air bags do not deploy as intended in a crash, the risk of injury increases. Affected vehicles are certain 2018-2019 Toyota Tundra and Sequoia models and 2019 Toyota Avalon and Avalon Hybrid models.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will update the air bag ECU software at no cost to you. Owners can also contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 and should check their VIN for open recalls.
