Mitsubishi Outlander Recall 18V620: Brakes May Engage Too Long, Raising Rear-End Crash Risk

NHTSA campaign 18V620, reported September 14, 2018, 9,166 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some Mitsubishi Outlander, Outlander Sport, Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross vehicles have a Forward Collision Mitigation system with software that can detect pedestrians. The software may apply the brakes for longer than needed, even after a pedestrian is no longer detected.

When the system keeps braking unnecessarily, a driver may respond by applying additional brake force. The resulting sudden deceleration can increase the risk of being struck from behind in a rear-end collision.

The remedy is a free software update. Dealers will reprogram the Forward Collision Mitigation control unit at no cost to owners. Owners can contact Mitsubishi Motors North America customer service at 1-888-648-7820, referencing recall SR-18-007, and should check their vehicle identification number for any open recalls.
