BMW M5 Recall 18V473: Fuel gauge may read too high, risking sudden stalling

NHTSA campaign 18V473, reported July 17, 2018, 1,645 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The fuel level sensor inside the fuel tank can become stuck against a fuel line, so the fuel gauge may show more fuel than is actually left in the tank.

Because the reading can be inaccurate, the car may run out of fuel and stall without warning, which increases the risk of a crash. Keep an eye on your fuel level and do not rely on the gauge alone if it seems off.

The repair is free. Dealers will secure the in-tank fuel line so it can no longer touch the fuel level sensor. BMW will notify owners, and you can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. You can also check your VIN for open recalls and schedule the free repair at an authorized dealer.
