Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner EFX Recall 18V410: Air Brake Valve May Cause Sudden Parking Brake Activation

NHTSA campaign 18V410, reported June 15, 2018, 5 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2017 and 2018 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner EFX transit buses may have an air brake check valve that is plumbed incorrectly. This can prevent the primary and secondary air systems from being isolated from each other.

If the secondary air system loses pressure rapidly, the faulty valve can cause air to drain from both systems at once. The parking brakes may then activate suddenly, which increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect the check valve and repair it as needed, free of charge. Owners can contact Daimler Trucks North America customer service at 1-800-547-0712 and reference recall number FL-774. You can also check your vehicle identification number for open recalls.

Problem
Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner EFX transit buses. The check valve for the air brake system may not be plumbed correctly which can cause the primary air system to not be isolated from the secondary air system.
Risk
In the event of a rapid loss of air pressure in the secondary system, the incorrectly plumbed check valve can cause rapid air loss in both secondary and primary system, causing the parking brakes to activate suddenly. This will increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and repair the check valve as needed, free of charge. The recall began on August 12, 2018. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's number for this recall is FL-774.
