Nissan Versa Recall 18V401: Passenger airbag may explode and spray metal fragments

NHTSA campaign 18V401, reported June 15, 2018, 104,762 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain Nissan Versa cars from 2010 to 2012 have a front passenger airbag inflator that can rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash. Long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes can degrade the propellant inside, which may cause the inflator to explode.

An inflator explosion can send sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants, which may cause serious injury or death. The recall covers vehicles registered in specific states, so owners should not assume their car is excluded.

Nissan will notify affected owners, and an authorized dealer will replace the front passenger airbag inflator with an alternate inflator at no cost. Owners can contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, and should check their VIN for open recalls.
