BMW X3 Recall 18V374: Steering Wheel May Miss Hands-Off Driving Alerts

NHTSA campaign 18V374, reported June 6, 2018, 51 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2018-2019 BMW X3 vehicles equipped with the Active Lane Keeping Assistant may have a steering wheel that is incompatible with the lane keeping function. The system may fail to detect when the driver's hands are off the wheel.

If the sensors do not detect that the hands are off the wheel, one or more warning signals may not be triggered. This increases the risk of a crash, because the driver may not be alerted to take control of the vehicle.

BMW will notify affected owners, and authorized dealers will inspect the steering wheel and replace it if necessary. The repair is free of charge. Owners can also contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and should check their VIN for open recalls.
