Entegra Aspire Recall 18V077: Undersized Air Brake Tank Can Weaken Braking

NHTSA campaign 18V077, reported January 30, 2018, 393 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The air brake supply reservoir on these motorhomes is smaller than required. During repeated brake use, it may not hold enough air to operate the brakes properly, which reduces braking performance and raises the risk of a crash. The vehicles also fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 121 for air brake systems.

Owners will be notified by Entegra Coach. The air supply reservoir will be replaced with a larger one that has twice the capacity, and the repair is free at Spartan service centers. The recall began February 16, 2018. To arrange the repair, contact Spartan Chassis at 1-800-543-4277 or Entegra customer service at 1-800-517-9137, and check your vehicle identification number (VIN) for any open recalls.

Safety recall 18V077Entegra Coach
Component
SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:SUPPLY:RESERVOIR/TANK
Problem
Entegra Coach (Entegra) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Aspire and 2017-2018 Insignia motorhomes built on a Spartan chassis. The air brake supply reservoir is less than 12x the combined volume of air for all service brake chambers. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."
Risk
The undersized air brake supply reservoir may provide an insufficient air supply to properly operate the brakes during repetitive brake applications, reducing braking performance and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Entegra will notify owners, and Spartan service centers will replace the current air supply reservoir with one that has twice the capacity, free of charge. The recall began on February 16, 2018. Owners may contact Spartan Chassis at 1-800-543-4277 or Entegra customer service at 1-800-517-9137.
