Suzuki GSX-R1000 Recall 18V064: Missed Upshift Can Break Drive Chain, Causing Power Loss

NHTSA campaign 18V064, reported January 22, 2018, 3,097 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

On certain motorcycles, shifting up from first to second gear can fail to engage second gear, leaving the transmission in neutral. If the rider then shifts into second without disengaging the clutch, engine RPM can spike very high, and the drive chain may stretch or break. A broken chain causes the motorcycle to lose power, which increases the risk of a crash.

Owners should contact Suzuki customer service at 1-714-572-1490 or take their motorcycle to an authorized Suzuki dealer. Suzuki will notify owners, and dealers will replace the Engine Control Module and inspect and replace the drive chain and sprockets as needed, at no cost. Check your VIN for open recalls to confirm whether your motorcycle is affected.
