Nissan Versa Recall 18V044: Passenger airbag inflator may explode in a crash

NHTSA campaign 18V044, reported January 10, 2018, 52,614 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2009-2012 Nissan Versa vehicles have a passenger-side frontal airbag inflator that can explode when the airbag deploys in a crash. Over time, the propellant inside the inflator can degrade from long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes, which can cause the inflator to rupture.

An inflator explosion can send sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants, which may cause serious injury or death. The affected vehicles are grouped into zones by where they were registered, and Nissan's notice lists the specific states in each zone.

Nissan will notify owners, and authorized dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator free of charge. The recall began March 9, 2018. You can contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261, and you should check your VIN for open recalls on your vehicle.
