New Flyer XD40 Recall 18V020: Front Brake Air Hose May Disconnect, Losing Front Braking

NHTSA campaign 18V020, reported January 9, 2018, 283 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Some New Flyer transit buses may have air brake hose connections at the front axle ABS modulator valves that were not tightened to the proper torque. The hose can disconnect, which would stop air pressure from reaching either front brake assembly. The vehicle would then have no front braking force, so stopping distances get longer and the risk of a crash increases. The affected vehicles also fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 121 for air brake systems.

New Flyer of America will notify owners and will reconnect the air hose to the proper tightness at no cost to the owner. The recall began on January 11, 2018. If you own a affected bus, contact New Flyer customer service at 1-204-224-6706, and check your vehicle identification number for any open recalls.

Component
SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:ANTILOCK
Problem
New Flyer of America Inc. (New Flyer) is recalling certain 2017 XD40, XDE40, XN40, XT60, and 2016-2017 XDE60 transit buses. The air brake hose connections for the front axle ABS modulator valves may not be properly tightened, possibly resulting in the air brake hose disconnecting. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."
Risk
If the brake hose disconnects from the ABS modulator valve, there will be no brake force applied to either of the front axle brake assemblies, lengthening the needed braking distance and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
New Flyer will notify owners, and will reconnect the air hose using the proper tightness, free of charge. The recall began on January 11, 2018. Owners may contact New Flyer customer service at 1-204-224-6706. New Flyer's number for this recall is R18-001.
