Mazda B-Series Truck Recall 18V016: Passenger airbag inflator may explode, sending metal fragments

NHTSA campaign 18V016, reported January 9, 2018, 84 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2009 Mazda B-Series trucks have a passenger-side front airbag inflator that can rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash. The propellant inside can degrade over time from long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes, which can cause the inflator to explode.

An inflator explosion can send sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants, which may cause serious injury or death. This recall applies only to trucks registered in specific northern and western states, including Alaska, Colorado, Michigan, New York, Washington, and Wyoming.

Mazda will notify affected owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger airbag inflator with an alternate inflator at no cost. You can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 (recall number 2118A), and you should check your VIN for any open recalls.
