Mclaren MP4-12C Recall 18V007: Passenger airbag may explode, sending metal fragments into occupants

NHTSA campaign 18V007, reported January 5, 2018, 371 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The passenger frontal airbag inflator in certain 2013 vehicles may rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash. Long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes can degrade the propellant that fills the airbag, causing the inflator to explode instead of inflating the bag as designed. This affects only vehicles registered in specific states and territories, including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

An inflator explosion can send sharp metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants, which may result in serious injury or death. Owners should check their vehicle's VIN for open recalls and contact McLaren customer service at 1-646-429-8916 for more information.

The repair is free. An authorized dealer will replace the front passenger airbag inflator at no cost to the owner, and McLaren will notify affected owners directly.
