Ford Mustang Recall 17V814: Gear display may not warn driver car is in Park, risking rollaway

NHTSA campaign 17V814, reported December 18, 2017, 2,100 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Certain 2018 vehicles with an automatic transmission and a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster may have a fault. If the ignition is turned off while the transmission is not in Park, the instrument cluster may not light up the gear position display, and the "Key in Ignition" chime may not sound when the driver's door is opened. The vehicle does not meet federal safety standards covering transmission shift sequencing and theft protection.

Without a visual or audible warning that the vehicle is in Park, the vehicle may roll away after the driver exits if the parking brake has not been applied. This increases the risk of injury or a crash.

The repair is free. Dealers will update the instrument cluster software as needed. Owners will be notified by mail. The recall is expected to begin February 5, 2018. You can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 17C21, and you can check your VIN for open recalls at an authorized Ford dealer.
