Mitsubishi I-Miev Recall 17V793: Passenger Airbag May Rupture and Spray Metal Fragments

NHTSA campaign 17V793, reported December 8, 2017, 144 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The passenger-side frontal airbag inflator in these vehicles can rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash. Long-term exposure to humidity and temperature changes can degrade the propellant inside the inflator, and that degradation can cause it to break apart.

If the inflator ruptures, metal fragments can strike the occupants, which may result in serious injury or death. Owners should take this recall seriously even if the vehicle seems to be running normally.

The replacement is free. Dealers will replace the passenger-side frontal airbag inflator at no cost. Mitsubishi will notify owners, but you can also contact Mitsubishi Motors North America customer service at 1-888-648-7820 and check your VIN for open recalls.

The repair is normally free at an authorized dealer.
