Ford Ranger Recall 17V787: Driver airbag inflator may rupture, sending metal fragments at occupants

NHTSA campaign 17V787, reported December 11, 2017, 328,213 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

The driver-side frontal airbag inflator can develop excessive internal pressure when the airbag deploys, which may cause the inflator to rupture. In a crash severe enough to deploy the driver's airbag, metal fragments could strike the occupants and cause serious injury or death.

Owners are advised not to drive the vehicle until the repair has been completed. Ford will notify affected owners, and an authorized dealer will replace the driver's frontal airbag inflator with an alternate inflator at no cost. Owners who previously received a replacement inflator under the earlier interim recall (16V-036) must also return to a dealer to have the alternate inflator installed.

To check whether your vehicle is affected, enter your VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup or contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, referencing recall 17S42.
