- Component
- ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING; TRAILER HITCHES
- Problem
- Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2017 CX-5 vehicles equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness. This harness may be routed such that there is insufficient clearance between the harness and the exhaust muffler, allowing the wiring harness to contact the muffler.
- Risk
- Contact with the muffler may damage the trailer wiring harness, potentially resulting in the trailer lighting being inoperative, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reroute the trailer hitch harness away from the muffler, replacing the harness if it is damaged, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 20, 2018. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1617K.
- Notes
- Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
What this recall means for you
A trailer hitch wiring harness may be routed too close to the exhaust muffler, with too little clearance between the two. Over time, the harness can contact the hot muffler and become damaged. This can make the trailer lights stop working, which raises the risk of a crash because other drivers may not see your trailer or your intentions.
Owners will be notified by mail. Authorized Mazda dealers will reroute the trailer hitch harness away from the muffler and replace the harness if it has already been damaged, at no cost to you. The recall is expected to begin January 20, 2018. You can also contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, and you should check your vehicle's VIN for open recalls.
If you tow a trailer with your 2017 CX-5, have the trailer lights checked and schedule the free repair with a dealer as soon as you receive the notice.
