Smeal Aerial Recall 17V721: Fire Pump Relief Valve May Open and Cut Water Pressure

NHTSA campaign 17V721, reported November 16, 2017, 20 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

Rings that hold the pressure relief valves in the water pumps of these fire apparatus can corrode after repeated exposure to water. When a ring fails, the relief valve can open on its own, reducing the water pressure available for firefighting.

Lower water pressure during a fire may hinder firefighting efforts, which could increase the risk of injury. Owners of affected Smeal aerial and pumper fire apparatus should contact Smeal customer service at 1-800-543-5008 or Hale customer service at 1-800-533-3569, referencing Smeal recall number 17028. The remedy, a kit installed by Hale service providers, is free of charge.

Smeal will notify owners directly. You can also check your vehicle identification number for open recalls through the NHTSA website, and contact an authorized service provider to schedule the free repair.
