BMW I3 Recall 17V720: Front airbag may raise neck injury risk for unbelted drivers

NHTSA campaign 17V720, reported November 16, 2017, 32,000 vehicles potentially affected.

What this recall means for you

BMW is recalling certain 2014-2018 BMW i3 electric and hybrid electric vehicles because the driver's frontal air bag system does not fully meet federal occupant crash protection requirements (FMVSS 208). In a frontal crash, a small adult driver who is not wearing a seat belt may face a higher risk of neck injury.

The fix is a software update to the driver air bag control unit, performed by authorized BMW dealers at no cost to the owner. BMW will notify owners by mail, and the recall is expected to begin January 8, 2018. You can also contact BMW customer service at 1-855-269-3361 with the dedicated i3 recall line.

Do not wait for the letter to arrive. Check your vehicle identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA recall lookup or with a BMW dealer to confirm whether your i3 is affected, and always wear your seat belt, which reduces the risk of injury in a crash.
